The choices in entrance control: The Turnstile and speedgate and optical turnstile

There are a number of options available to control the passage of people entering a building; these include a turnstile, an optical turnstile or a speedgate.

Turnstiles
Traditional turnstiles can be used in manned reception areas where appearance and throughput are not the highest requirement. Turnstiles in general are not compliant with many disability legislations.

Turnstiles require a manned presence as they can be climbed over quite easily.

Turnstiles are not always aesthetically acceptable.

Optical Turnstiles
Optical Turnstiles are a good alternative to turnstiles in applications where aesthetics and speed of throughput are the key issues.

Optical Turnstiles are designed to replace traditional fixed arm turnstiles used to control building access. They utilise infrared beams between the optical turnstile pedestals thereby removing the need for a traditional turnstile barrier. Optical Turnstiles provide a similar level of security as more traditional turnstiles.

Optical Turnstiles can be installed in such a way as to be compliant with many disability legislations.

Optical Turnstiles offer the most discrete option; there are lots of choices of finishes in terms of aesthetics. Optical Turnstiles are the most architecturally flexible solution as there is no barrier.

Speedgates
A speedgate is a hybrid of a turnstile and an optical turnstile. The lane of a speedgate is monitored by IR beams, like an optical turnstile with the barrier of a turnstile that closes on an unauthorised person. Some designs of speedgates can also be configured to be normally closed.

A speedgate is a good option for a site where security, aesthetics and speed of throughput are paramount.

A speedgate can be installed in such a way as to be compliant with the DDA and other disabilities legislation. However some designs of speedgate require significantly wider pedestal for disabled lanes widths. It is worth checking with speedgate manufacturer if this is the case.

For emergency egress some speedgates are fitted with break away arms. Additionally most speedgates integrate with the Fire Alarm system to automatically drop their barriers.
